About us

Li Hongbo is well-known for his relationship with the paper material and his reinvention of its forms and our expectations of the medium as artistic vehicle. His paper sculptures reveal influences of folk traditions in China.

People tend to use familiar objects as metaphors for themselves. He has chosen paper to depict life. "Baby", "Boy", "Girl", "Yong Man", "Skull" and "Skeleton" are the major works he will present to the audience in this exhibition. The attempt to use white paper sculptures to recreate these figures, and interpret birth, aging, illness and death along the trail of time.

Li also models his own works after these ubiquitous decorations. By gluing together, up to tens of thousands of individual sheets, Li builds blocks of paper that he carves into human figures, objects, and replicas of Classical Greek and Italian Busts. While they look solid, a tug reveals their slinky-like capability to stretch, bend and morph into a myriad of grotesque and humorous deformations.
