Makanne and Udaipur
In 2001 Anne Vilsbøll purchased Mughal Palace Hotel with the purpose of establishing a residency with atelier and studios for herself and artists from around the world. "Makanne" is a combination of the Hindi word for house and the name Anne. It was opened as an artist-in-residency house in 2005. It is situated in a quiet area in the old town of Udaipur in the neighborhood of Lal Ghat, and has a view of the famous Lake Pichola.
Udaipur is one of the most beautiful cities in India, situated in the South Western corner of Rajasthan, the largest state in the country. The maharajas have stayed here for centuries. The city was founded in 1567 by Maharaja Udai Singh II, and though it has approximately 500,000 inhabitants, it is still regarded as a smaller Indian city. Next to Makanne is the biggest palace complex in Rajasthan, City Palace, a flamboyant fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. The palace is built on a hilltop and has a panoramic view over the lake, the city, and its many historical monuments. Udaipur is proud of its heritage, its music, theatre, art and local crafts. There are many small art schools, wood carvers, furniture carpenters, dyers etc. In the lively Lal Ghat neighbourhood one finds many restaurants, internet cafes, and small shops with everything one needs. Udaipur has easy access to other places in India should you wish to travel farther afield.
Emilie Lundstrøm was educated at Fatamorgana, the photographic art school of Denmark, at Glasgow School of Art (Fine Art Photography, BA Honors) and has her MFA from Bard College and the International Center of Photography (New York) in Advanced Photographic Studies. She has participated in several international exhibitions, and has arranged exhibitions and critical events on photography.
Anne Vilsbøll, artist and author, is an authority on handmade paper as an artistic means of expression. She studied French and Art history, is educated teacher in visual communication, and for the past 30 years she has travelled extensively studying paper. She has written numerous articles and has published books with Borgen Publishing. She has been a guest professor at several art academies and design schools in Scandinavia. She exhibits internationally and curates exhibitions. She lives in France, Denmark and Udaipur.
