MOOLAM – the roots, a one day National Seminar and Dance Festival

On the occasion of Guru Poornima, one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, Shambhavi School of Dance is organizing MOOLAM – the roots, a one day National Seminar and Dance Festival in Bangalore. Being the brain child of Smt. Vyjayanthi Kashi, a Kuchipudi exponent, MOOLAM addresses the topic of Guru Shishya Parampara  and is being organized on 9thJuly 2017 as a tribute to the Gurus.

The influence of a Guru stands prominent in all walks of life of a Shishya. Even Lord Krishna had Sandipini as his Guru. Guru is the one who inspires and illuminates the thoughts of a Shishya and sets the lens through with the Shishya views the world. This has been the essence of Guru Shishya Parampara which has been the ancient system of imparting knowledge; a system unique to India. It has been followed for ages now in the training of dance, music, yoga, theatre and other arts forms. All legends, irrespective of the field, have been trained through the Guru Shishya Parampara. With the changing times, our classical arts have moved on from being taught in a Guru's courtyard to closed classrooms in institutions/universities.

However, in spite of several social, economical and religious changes that have crept in, Guru Poornima is a part of our calendar and undoubtedly all ancient arts begin their lessons with the chant ”Guru brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru devo Maheshwara..."

Being in the field of dance for over 3 decades and a guru for nearly 15 years, Vyjayanthi Kashi strongly feels the need to reinforce the wonderful Guru Shisya Parampara. Hence we organize this seminar and dance festival billed as “MOOLAM – the roots "on 9th July 2017 at H N Kalakshetra, Jayanagar, Bangalore. The festival also features performances in the evening and this is probably the only festival which offers a dedicated slot for the shishya to perform with his /her Guru.

As part of the third edition of MOOLAM, we have eminent scholars from various parts of the country deliver talks as part of the morning seminar session. Some of the topics that will be addressed in the seminar are a deeper understanding of Guru Shishya Parampara, the relevance of Guru Shishya Parampara in today’s globalized world, changing trends in Guru Shishya Parampara, does Guru Shisya Parampara exist in the institutionalized mode of teaching; if so how effective is it? Etc.

The evening performances will feature exponents from different dance forms. This year we have one of the most senior legends of India, Padma Bhushan Dr.Kakak Rele perform for us. In addition to this, Bangalore audience will get to witness for the very first time Guru Shishya Parampara in the Kalavantalu style (Andhra Devadasi style). Other dancers and scholars being featured are Jhelum Paranjape (Odissi), Vyjayanthi Kashi (Kuchipudi), Dr. Yashoda Thakore(Kalavantalu), Dr. Meera Rajaram(Music) and
Dr. Vanaja Uday(Dance).

Entry to the event is free of cost and open to public.
