What better way to celebrate Maha Shivratri, one of the most anticipated and awaited Hindu festivals, than at the Shivoham Shiva Temple?
The Shivoham Shiva Temple is home to one of the most spellbinding statues of Lord Shiva in the world. The resplendent 65-feet marble statue of Shiva built in 1995, draws lakhs of devotees and visitors on Maha Shivratri every year. Devotees return year after year with gratitude in their hearts because their prayers have been answered, their dreams have come true. It is not without reason that the statue of Shiva at the Shivoham Shiva Temple is said to be the most powerful Shiva statue in the world.
The Legends and Stories behind Maha Shivratri
The origin of the Hindu festival of Maha Shivratri is attributed to different stories. According to a Maha Shivratri story narrated in Shiva Purana, Brahma and Vishnu were fighting to establish who is superior over the other. Lord Shiva was asked by other Gods to pacify them. Lord Shiva assumed the form of a huge column of fire in between them to highlight the futility of their fight. Since Shiva helped pacify the fighting Gods, the day is celebrated in His honour.
As per another legend, this night is believed to be the night of Lord Shiva’s wedding to Goddess Parvati. et another story states that Maha Shivratri is the night when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation and destruction. A popular belief associates Maha Shivratri with the legend of Neelkanth. A pot of poison, Halahala, besides other things, was created during the churning of the ocean (Sagar Manthan). Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the universe from its annihilating effects. Gods danced all night to protect Shiva from the harmful effects of the poison and kept Him awake. Though the poison didn’t harm Shiva, it turned His neck blue, which is why He is called as Neelkanth.
