Brief on the Artist and the event:
Gopal Ghose is one of India's most renowned 20th-century painters. An 18-day show of the master is being held at Kumar Gallery in downtown Sunder Nagar from November 14.
Curated by scholar-columnist Uma Nair, 'Rustic Resonance' features 58 paintings of Calcutta-born Ghose, who is celebrated for his modernist approach to art while being a sculpture as well as an architect. The show focuses on his works from the 1950s and ’60s, which critics hail were the peak period of Ghose's creativity. As the title of the exhibition goes, the artworks focus on nature — especially the famed rural landscapes. A travelling artist who had a fascination for the country's southern scenes as well, Ghose was initially inspired by the Bengal School before he was drawn to the pictorial vocabulary developed by European Expressionists and Cubists even while he maintained a fascination for Chinese masters and their approach to figurative drawings.
