9). An area of about 18000 hectares has been proposed as a sanctuary for migratory birds. The water catchment area is spread across around the town of Bhigwan. Bhigwan is an important destination and transit point for migratory waterfowl.
Bhigwan is a small town around 100 kms away from Pune and is also referred to as the “Bharatpur of Maharashtra”, as it becomes a hotbed of migratory birds during the winter. Bhigwan is at one end of the huge Yashwant Sagar reservoir, forming the backwaters of the Ujain dam. One of the main attractions during the migratory season is the arrival of the pink greater flamingos. Durin...g the months of early January – late February, this place is thronged by bird lovers from all over Maharashtra.
Once in Bhigwan, Diksal and Kumbhargaon are two main spots for spotting birds. Kumbhargaon is small
countryside village 3 kms ahead of Bhigwan, Kumbhargaon is located on backwaters of Ujani dam. The
nice tar road drives through the village to the river. Once there, one can explore birds either by boat or by foot.
5.30 am: Departure from Pune to Bhigwan.
8.00 am: Reach Bhigwan.
8.15 am: Boat ride to see flamingoes and other aquatic birds.
10.00 am: Walking trail to see birds.
12.30 pm: Lunch.
4.00 pm: Arrival in Pune.
